Super Bowl to reach record-breaking views

With about 43 percent of households watching, Super Bowl Sunday has become a national holiday.  This year a record-breaking 100 million viewers are expected to tune in to the big game, according to industry research firm IBISWorld, an increase of 1.1 percent from 2009.

One of the factors contributing to the growth in viewership is the current state of the economy, which is causing consumers to turn towards cheap forms of entertainment.  Secondly, Super Bowl viewership has been steadily increasing since 2005, as it further establishes itself as a national holiday.  Besides the actual game, the excitement surrounding the commercials, halftime show and parties continues to grow annually.

With such high viewership numbers, corporations can still realize the value of their nearly $3 million, 30-second advertising investments.  This year, CBS lowered the average price of a 30-second commercial spot to $2.7 million, down from NBC’s $3 million average last year.  This strategy has proved successful as CBS has already sold out their ad space for the Feb. 7 game, despite major players like Pepsi and FedEx dropping out due to economic troubles.

“Theoretically, CBS could have charged more but the ad space was expected to be difficult to sell this year given the market conditions,” said Toon van Beeck, senior analyst with IBISWorld.  “In the months leading up to this year’s game however, CBS was well ahead of where it was in 2007, when the network last hosted the Super Bowl.”

In fact, the number of 30-second commercial slots during the Super Bowl has increased from 55 in 2007 to 62 in 2010.

“Advertisers this year will likely be getting the most value for their dollar in recent Super Bowl history,” adds van Beeck.  “Given total viewership will top 100 million and the fact that they’re paying 10 percent less than last year, makes this investment a worthwhile strategy.”

The first cougar cruise set sail in December on the Carnival Elation, but it seems the party has been washed up, according to Carnival’s spokeswoman:

“We have decided not to have any future groups on our ships booked on this theme,” said Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz. “There were not any particular issues on board. However, we simply made the business decision not to have future groups book on this theme.”

There’s going to be some unhappy laddies now.  Perhaps Royal-Carribean can pick up the slack?

Top 5 Places NOT To Put An Engagement Ring

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, love is in the air and so are engagements.  However, recent news has seen some pretty funny and remarkable stories of proposals gone wrong and guys losing the ring.  David Mamane, CEO of online jewelry boutique, MyJewelryBox.com suggests the following:

Top 5 places NOT to put the engagement ring before you propose

  • Inside a hot air balloon:  Pastor James Ng learned the hard way when he dropped his MyJewelryBox.com engagement ring hundreds of feet from a hot air balloon during his proposal.  At least the whole situation wasn’t full of hot air…she said yes and a week later he found the ring.
  • In a cup: It really stunk when a NJ man had to go through over 10 tons of garbage to retrieve the wedding ring his wife placed in a paper cup, which he accidently threw away.
  • On a boat deck or pier:  Crashing waves while proposing is romantic, but if you drop the ring into the water—a dive team search and rescue is not.
  • On a bridge: How depressing, a guy approached by the police-suicide prevention squad on the Brooklyn Bridge had to explain that he wasn’t trying to commit suicide, rather he was looking for the engagement ring that he had just dropped.
  • Hidden in food: It might be hard to stomach, but women have swallowed the ring their fiancée had hidden in champagne, dessert, and even a Wendy’s Frosty.

Does your New Year’s resolution include an exercise plan?

Are you one of the millions of Americans who will resolve to exercise more in the New Year? If so, take advice from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) and take it slowly. Too much activity too quickly can cause a multitude of foot and ankle problems including stress fractures, ruptured tendons, or plantar fasciitis.

The best way to avoid these foot and ankle injuries is to know your limits and to follow a sensible program when exercising. Preventative measures include:

  • Select the proper footwear for the specific type of exercise
  • Start out slowly when beginning an exercise program following a layoff period
  • Walk and stretch to warm up gradually before running or walking
  • Focus on stretching and strengthening the muscles in the calf
  • Increase running or walking distance and speed gradually, in increments no greater than 10% per week
  • Avoid unaccustomed strenuous sprinting
  • Take the time to cool down properly after exercise

Keith L. Wapner, MD, clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital and President-Elect of the AOFAS, sees many patients with overuse injuries and he offers the following advice, “Plantar fasciitis, tendonitis and stress fractures are the most common overuse injuries. These can be avoided by remembering to include a stretching protocol prior to your workout and following the “rule of tens” by not increasing your exercise amount by more than ten percent per week.”

By adhering to these simple measures you may avoid painful overuse ankle injuries and achieve success with your New Year’s resolution. For more information on overuse injuries as well as resources on foot and ankle care go to the AOFAS website www.aofas.org. The site also features a surgeon referral service that makes it easy for patients to find a local orthopaedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle care.

Industries on their way up in 2010

With the economy showing signs of recovery, industry research firm IBISWorld analyzed more than 700 industries to identify the winning sectors in the coming year.

Many of the biggest industry losers during the recession are expecting a massive rebound in revenue growth and are on their way up in 2010:

Finance
The financial system, which was brought to its knees over the past two years, is showing signs of life. The biggest winners in the upcoming year will be:

However, these industries have a long way to go before they return to pre-recession conditions.

Oil & Gas
Much like the finance sector, oil-related industries are expected to rebound strongly in 2010:

Demand for crude oil and gas will rise substantially in 2010.  With the recovery in the world economy and increasing revenue prospects for fuel distributors and retailers, operating conditions will be more favorable.

Automotive
Virtually the entire automotive supply chain in 2010 will be in far better shape than the disasters of the past two years:

In fact, these industries and New Car Dealers are the top three growth industries in terms of employment for 2010 – all of which will grow their employee size by more than 16 percent.

Telecommunications
The telecommunications sector has remained resilient in the face of the recession, and is set to thrive during the recovery:

This sector is poised to prosper from a recovery with the government’s allocation of $7.2 billion in stimulus funds. Throughout the recovery, M&A activity is expected to continue as telecoms attempt to position themselves to make the most of the converged communications world that will emerge over the next decade.

Retail
Following a dismal year of retail demand over 2008 and much of 2009, the coming year is set to be far more positive for retailers:

Although spending in 2010 will not mirror the highs experienced throughout the economic boom, it will be significantly better than that of the past two years. eCommerce-related businesses will outperform the broader retail market, while women’s and children’s clothing sales will also experience favorable gains. However, men’s clothing will take longer to recover.

Health
Operators that provide elective treatments had some trouble during the first half of 2009, as the labor market has deteriorated and consumer sentiments remained weak.  But, demand should intensify for these industries from mid-2010 onwards:

Other Winners
Other industries expected to experience solid growth during the recovery period include Donations, Grants and Endowments, Water Well Drilling, Mining Support, and Biotechnology.
